Quick answer

On Maytag top load washers drn or F9 E1 is a long-drain alert. The hose installation is the first place to look.

Model compatibility: Maytag reuses codes across series and model years, so drn may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

What this code means

drn

drn (F9 E1) is a long-drain alert: the washer takes too long to drain.

When a Maytag top load washer displays drn or F9 E1, it has decided that water is leaving the tub too slowly. This is a drain problem, and Maytag says it can sometimes come down to installation.

Hose and standpipe

Look at the drain hose before anything else: it should not be kinked or clogged. Also confirm that it reaches no deeper than 4.5 inches (114 mm) into the standpipe, that it is held in place with the drain hose form on the drainpipe or tub, and that nothing covers the opening with tape. A hose end lower than 36 inches from the floor lets the washer siphon.

Maytag also reminds owners to use HE detergent in these washers.
