Why Your Maytag Dishwasher Leaves Dishes Wet
Damp dishes are often about drying method and loading, not a broken machine.
Why Your Maytag Dishwasher overview
Dishes stay wet when the rinse aid is empty, the water is not hot enough, or the load traps water. Fill the rinse aid, run hot water at the sink before starting, and tip cups and plastic so water runs off. If a cycle ends with wet loads even then, the heating element may need diagnosis.
Opening the dishwasher to find damp cups is annoying, and wet dishes alone do not reveal which part is at fault. Begin with observations that are safe and repeatable, and that will be handy if you end up booking a Maytag service visit.
Start with the simple conditions
Top up the rinse-aid dispenser, check that its dial is not sitting at the lowest level, and tilt cups and plastic tubs so they cannot collect water. Do the checking with the dishwasher in place, and never force a panel, fitting, or control. If one small change helps, let the machine finish a single regular cycle before concluding anything.
Drying here relies on warm surfaces and moving air, so cracking the door before the program ends can weaken the result. Also note whether the wetness is constant, tied to a particular load or setting, or appears only after the machine has been running for a time; that is more telling than restarting repeatedly. Dishes that are both wet and cold feel different from dishes that are warm but spotted, so touch them as you unload.
How do rinse aid and water temperature affect drying?
Maytag says the rinse aid dispenser holds 5 ounces and typically lasts 1 to 3 months. A clear indicator means it is empty. Raise the setting a little at a time for hard water or spots. Water also needs heat: Maytag recommends a supply of at least 120F for best washing and drying, so run the hot tap for 30 to 60 seconds before starting the cycle.
Safe checks that protect the appliance
Your model's use-and-care guide details its controls, filter access, and care schedule. Clean only the parts it marks as owner-serviceable, stick to the cleaning products it suggests, and reinstall each removable piece the way it was built to sit.
- Before wiping the display clear, copy down any message or error code that appears.
- Look over the hoses, vents, seals, and plugs that can be seen, while leaving electrical connections untouched.
- A single measured trial is better than repeated rapid attempts.
- Cleaning the filter monthly and running a dishwasher cleaner now and then cuts the mineral buildup that spoils drying.
Safe to try
- Adding rinse aid
- Loading so water drains off
- Letting the cycle run to the end
Leave to a technician
- Opening the heater circuits
- Changing drying controls from inside
- Using racks that are damaged
Prior to starting another cycle, remove anything that is in the way, take some weight out of a tub that is stuffed, and look at whether airflow, the water supply, or door clearance is being choked off. Pressing reset over and over is a poor habit; an intermittent fault can hide behind it, and water, heat, or pressure may end up somewhere unintended.

Frequently asked questions
Fill the rinse-aid dispenser, confirm its setting is not at minimum, and angle cups or plastic containers so they cannot hold water.
Only if there is no burning smell, smoke, sparking, gas odor, water near electricity, or other safety warning. Otherwise stop and arrange service.
Book a diagnosis when the safe checks above do not resolve a dishwasher leaving dishes wet, or when the next step would require opening the appliance or testing internal parts.
